“Vascular surgeons are specialists who are highly trained to treat diseases of the vascular system. Your blood vessels –arteries carrying oxygen-rich blood and veins carrying blood back to the heart — are the roadways of your circulatory system. Without smoothly flowing blood, your body cannot function. Conditions such as hardening of the arteries can create “traffic jams” in your circulatory system, obstructing the flow of blood to any part of the body.“ – Society of Vascular Surgery

Dr. Steiner is the founder and president of Alyeska Vascular Surgery which he started in July 2012 specializing in both general and vascular surgery. He was drawn to Alaska’s hunting and fishing lifestyle after visiting in 2011 and serving residents of the Kenai Peninsula.

Zac entered the medical field in 1997 as an EMT. Born in Iowa, he graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelors of Arts in Chemistry and Psychology earning honors in chemistry. He then attended Des Moines University graduating with his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine.

Dr. Steiner completed his general surgery residency in Alabama and Missouri from 2004 to 2010 then proceeded to complete a vascular surgery fellowship in New Jersey from 2010 to 2012.

Immediately following fellowship, Dr. Steiner started Alyeska Vascular Surgery providing open and endovascular surgical services to Alaska.  Fast forward to current times, Dr. Steiner serves as the president of AVS staffed with over 20 employees providing vascular and general surgery services. Dr. Steiner collaborates with various specialties such as nephrology, orthopedics, and neurology as well as providing trauma services for Providence Alaska Medical Center and Alaska Regional Hospital.

Dr. Steiner specializes in the treatment of a wide range of vascular diseases from complex carotid stenosis and abdominal aortic aneurysms to upper and lower extremity arterial thrombus or claudication. Additionally, he performs a myriad of endovascular procedures like arterial angioplasties, arteriovenous fistula creation for hemodialysis and open peripheral artery bypass.

With a passion for teaching and development, Dr. Steiner serves as a Master Preceptor to medical students from Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences as well as University of Washington MEDEX physician assistant students. These partnerships have turned AVS into a sanctioned training facility for aspiring medical students.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Steiner enjoys traveling, outdoor activities such as fishing and hunting and displays a proclivity for alternative energy technology.
